Face it…

Your skin matters, specially your face. It’s a unique combination of features, muscles and colours that is unlike any other person, it is what makes you, you.

It’s time to put a care routine in place or perhaps tweak your existing routine for better results. Here are a few things i have found to keep my skin healthy and glowing:

Drink water – That’s right, lots of water. Ensure you drink 8 glasses minimum a day. Do not over do it though, as too much water can lead to puffiness and retention.

Face cream – Ensure you have a cream handy specifically formulated for face use. The best kind uses organic ingredients or have a really small ingredient list. This will ensure the best quality product and less chance of irritation or break outs. Use as prescribed, i like using a night cream so that my skin feels nourished after my shower and i will continue to benefit from it through my sleep.

Face wash – Just as stated above regarding the cream, ensure there are not to many artificial things added in the ingredients. Choose a face wash best suited for your skin type for best results.

Remove your makeup – Important, important, important. Keeping your make up on all day and all night is a no no for your skin. During the day you accumulate grime on your face and your makeup will fill your pours, therefore before heading to bed, remember to always remove your make up. Keep some removal wipes handy for those days you are feeling a little lazy and don’t have the energy for a shower of proper face wash.

Sunscreen – A tail as old as time, sunscreen stays true to the cause. Protecting your face from harmful rays, this is a must to maintain flawless skin.

Hydration – Putting nourishment back into your skin is a great way to keep it looking healthy. Cream definitely helps this process, however should you have particularly dry skin, having a nourishing spray is the way to go. A PH balance spray for oily skin also helps keep it in check.

Dealing with spots – Oh no! You wake up to the most horrible spot. Our first instinct is to instantly conceal. The problem is, packing on makeup will only make it worse. If possible, do a make up free day or apply very light makeup. Also invest in a heal type cream or simple home remedies when emergency strikes. Ensure the area is clean and avoid buildup of product for a speedy healing process.

Applying the above and starting as soon as possible, is honestly the best investment in yourself you can make. Having well looked after and radiant skin, will build your confidence and improve your health for years to come.

Reset your priorities

What are your priorities? Have you ever sat down to figure them out? Is it money? Is it fame? Is it admiration? Time to re-evaluate our priorities and take stock of what is really important in our lives.

Today our world is undergoing a crisis. The priorities of our community, family, government and country are taking center stage while this unfolds. The thing is, that many of us are unclear on our priorities, which often means we struggle to split our time between different things, or spend our time on some that are actually not that important at all.

Sit down and write what first comes to mind. Accumulate all your needs, desires, ideas in one list. You will see a common theme start to emerge. Split these into three categories, for example, Self/Work/Relationships. Review your list and cross off the things that are actually not that important or does not fit into your three main categories.

Now take a breath, clear your mind, reflect. Are my priorities selfish? Am i focusing on my wants instead of my needs? Are they even realistic? Write your new list. Consider your actual needs, the needs of your loved ones. Reset your previous preconceived ideas to formulate your true priorities. Now break down each priority into smaller achievable chunks. For example if your category is “self” you can break it down to “personal growth, mental health, physical health, self care etc:”

It’s up to you to figure out what will make the biggest impact in your life and the lives of those around you. The truth is that our ability to make an impact with our lives often depends on what we decide to prioritize. Once you’re clear on your actual priorities, you’ll be able to make better and quicker decisions that guide your life choices toward your goals.

Till next time…

Hey you!

Yes you! Don’t look behind you, i am taking directly to you.

You are important, you are loved and most importantly, you belong in this world. Sure you might have it rough right now, or even feel on top of the world, but things change. Know that you are not alone. You have the strength within you, use it to reach out to others. Your voice matters and we want to hear it.

Stand tall and flip that hair with attitude. Wear that crop top you have been dying to, even if it shows your love handles. Put on that dress you love but you are insecure about, even if it shows your arms. Embrace who you are and so will the world.

If the world doesn’t embrace you, who cares? YOU ARE FABULOUS!

To an extent everyone wants to be loved or admired, and allot of us tend to people please to feel that way. You are heading down a path you will never be able to recover from. Each time you change and twist yourself to fit a mold they want, until the real you no longer exists. You want to look like them, dress like them and even start talking like them.

Sometimes you have to completely conceal your personality or water it down, to be meek and mild for acceptance. No one likes watered down anything. It’s hard to realise when you are in it. It seems normal even through it might feel a little unnatural sometimes. You shrug it of and move forward, getting smaller and smaller as you give more and more.

This is a very unhealthy way of going through life. Most of you even notice this and will continue down this road out of fear or guilt. Now is the time to rid yourself of this negative space. Take action and bloom through the cracks of the concrete.

When you can be you, and i mean truly you, you cannot be stopped. Your mind will be blown when you discover all the potential. Negative people or comments will no longer phase you. You know who you are and can stand proudly and say “this is me, come and get it”. You will shed the negative influencers in your life and gain true life long companions. Sure you will loose some people you deem your closest confidants, but years later, looking back, you will realise what the true nature of their “friendship” was.

Know you are beautiful, know you are confident, know you are unique. You deserve the best life has to offer. You deserve the full human experience, the down’s and the up’s. Stay the course to the true you, put in the effort required and reap the rewards that follow.

Look to the horizon for the easier life that follows when you discover the revelation of you. Asses your situation and address it, now is the best time for moving forward. Let us all burst out of our cocoons to a kinder and realistic life.

After all… everything starts with the first step and i know you can do it!

How will this change us?

Change is scary…with the pandemic it is inevitable…i can’t help but wonder how will our world be changed. Will face masks become the new accessory? Will we only greet our coworkers with an elbow? Will all public spaces be sanitized regularly?

We are currently living through an historic event. Years from now, this time will be recorded in our history books. Our children’s children will read about us and our current events. How crazy is that?

One day were living our lives, going to work, having get-togethers with our friends and the next it’s the apocalypse. I still can’t believe we are here. It is like being in a movie or a bad dream, and you are just biding time until you wake up and realise that it’s not real. Unfortunately though, this is not true, we are in it and we all need to do our part.

I have to be honest, i am rather privileged considering the desperate position others are in. I have a home with a yard, both my husband and i have a job we can do remotely and we have enough finances to ensure provisions during this time. What ever position you are in, my heart goes out to you. While it may be at various levels, this thing effects us all and i do feel some comfort in knowing we are all in this together.

So what’s next? As the death toll rises around the world we are all eagerly waiting to see positive results. When will things get back to “normal”? Honestly, i don’t think it ever will. When we go out in the world again we will have to create a new “normal”, but what will that look like? Businesses will close their doors and no longer exist, our economy locally and in the world will be at an even worse state, and the world would have lost a percentage of its population.

While it’s impossible to predict the long lasting effects of this, we can all participate in rebuilding. Rebuilding our lives, our communities and our countries. Support local family run businesses and NGOs, praise and appreciate teachers and medical staff like never before, appreciate the little things like coffee with a friend and crowded dance floors, lastly let’s band together to build a stronger community.

Spice up your routine

Day in and day out we always stick to the same routine. Being creatures of habit, we drive to work the same route, generally eat the same breakfast and make dinner at a certain time every night. Like our life is on a loop, our week days become mundane. We look forward to the weekend, which always disappears and soon as it came.

It’s difficult to change our habits. Our daily repetitiveness brings us comfort and doing anything different sometimes ignites anxiety (especially in the time we are in now). I find changing my routine rather difficult. I like having a set structure and to have control in my day. But spicing things up, doesn’t necessarily mean a significant change. If you introduce small new things into your routine, you will find many benefits, and in no time this will become part of your regular day, but better!

Dedicate time to a “me time” event daily or weekly. Paint your nails, dye your hair, put on some luxurious cream before bed or even try a face mask. Dive into your latest secret obsession on Netflix and unwind. These have a dual purpose of self-care and relaxation, while also ticking an item off your to do list. It is punitive that we take care of ourselves, now more than ever.

Try some new recipes. Bringing new meat or vegetable items into your diet or trying different cooking methods, will not only be great for the pallet, but good for your health as well. Having new dishes, makes meal time exciting, with an added benefit of learning some new skills. No more beans on toast for every meal, lets start a food revolution.

Step away from your desk. Ok……we are all guilty of this one. It seems easier to stay at your desk and keep working when you are really busy. Specially since we are all at home now, having your meals while you hover over your computer is a no no. Sit in another room for lunch or have a cup of tea in the kitchen. Stepping away is also good for your eyes and over all metal health. We seemed glued to our screens these days, just getting in a break or stepping outside and getting some fresh air, always does me a world of good.

Make an effort to stay connected. This can be as simple as a phone call weekly or a message daily to a loved one. Book a date and time to set up a video call to catch up. Having that connection to others while we are isolated, should be our number one priority. Some people will find social distancing more difficult then others, be kind to one another and listen to their needs. Perhaps some will need a little extra TLC.

Slowly introduce these habits into your daily routine for best results. Take the time to discover what you should include, to live a more fulfilling life even in our current times.

Desperate times call for different measures

While i consider myself a home body, i am also, a rather social person. I try to stay connected with my family by getting together every other weekend, and i schedule events with my friends at least once a month. Making the effort and staying in touch with our loved ones is so very important.

Now being in the time we are in, this is not possible, so we came up with a few clever solutions:

  1. Game night – Yeah you heard me…game night! Get in touch with some friends, perhaps ones you have not seen in a while, organise a video chat and get playing. There are so many apps and online games to try.
  2. Girl time – If you have read some of my other blogs, you know by now, that getting some girl time is very important to me. Due to our current circumstances, we were unable to get together for a girls night. No problem! Schedule a girls night video call, pour your glass of wine, settle in your favorite chair and get chatting.
  3. Bonding – Sure we might be lacking the connection to our family and friends, but don’t forget about your significant other. Now is the perfect opportunity to get in some extra bonding time.
  4. Talk to the elderly – The most isolated demographic is the elderly. Don’t forget to call Grandpa or send a picture and message to Grandma. Stay in touch and ensure they don’t get the isolation blues.
  5. Daily check-ins – Check in with your family and friends or post regularly in your whats app groups, to ensure everyone is doing ok. It’s great to fit in a catch up video call with your loved ones to see what they have been up to or to share your day with them (even if you have not been that productive).
  6. Get creative – It’s ok to make light of our current situation. Sure, we know and understand the seriousness, but making a funny meme or sharing a silly thought, is a great pick me up when we are feeling disconnected or down. In my case, my husband created the Quarantini. It’s a martini with white rum, three olives and lemon peel to be enjoyed during the quarantine. Cheers!

Doing these things has honestly kept me sane and engaged during this time. It almost feels “normal”. Let’s all stay connected and get through this one day at a time.

The tool kit

Going through life there are so many lessons to learn. Each time you pick yourself up again collecting a tool to help you tackle next time. Now in my late twenties, i can already look at my partially filled tool box. The kit is compiled out of my accumulated life experiences and have shaped who i am today. Here are a few items i have collected and would love to share with you:

Be open to new experiences. Obviously you should not be saying yes to everything that comes your way, but always try to tackle new challenges. Do new things, break down your barriers, make new friends or try that food you always wanted to. Who knows, it could be the best thing you have ever done. Thinking back, if i didn’t take some risks in my life, i would not be where i am today. And you know what, today, is not so bad!

Trust should be earned. I have been knocked down with this one allot. I have learned to not throw my trust around willy nilly. Unfortunately, there are people in this world that have bad intentions. They pray on those who trust to quickly. Don’t get me wrong, you must still always see the best in others, however take relationships/friendships slowly to ensure you are placing your trust in the right people. Actions do speak louder than words here.

Never materialise negative thoughts. Sharing negative thoughts towards others is always a no no. Do not write that email to that annoying colleague, do not send that text to that vindictive friend and do not, i repeat do not send that voice note to your ex. This is a trap. Not only are you incriminating yourself, but you are also exasperating the issue. Relying on your emotions in the heat of the moment will always end in tears. Should there be a problem, tackle things head on and face to face, in a professional and kind manner or deal with it internally if it’s a you problem.

Honesty just is the best policy. Take ownership of your actions always. If you are confronted with a question, answer honestly to the best of your ability. Deceit is a slippery slope. Lying about even the smallest details or not saying anything at all (lying by omission) will snowball into more lies and you know where that leads. Avoid unnecessary stress and fess up. Be honest with others around you to create a healthy environment of honesty.

Always compliment and spread joy. Walk around with that smile on your face, we all know you look great with it on! Find one thing you like or admire on anyone you meet and compliment them on this. Not only does it feel great to give compliments, but will also intern effect their day in a positive way. Help that lady reach the can in the grocery store, strike up a conversion with the lonely elderly man and make a silly face at the toddler in the bank line. Spreading kindness and joy in your surroundings will inevitably create a better place for all.

Take a moment to smell the daisies. Life gets busy. We all get into our set routine, the dinners we make, the drive we take to work, day in day out. We get so crazy thinking about the next thing, we never stop to enjoy the moment we are in. I have come to the realisation that when i look forward to an event and i am finally in it, i am already looking to the next one. I have been missing out on my life. Quieting my mind and being present in every moment has been a great gift to me. Slowing down and enjoying life is a good thing. Soon we might not be mobile, or able to drive and have freedom like we do now. I want to look back fondly on the memories i didn’t waste.

Well, there you have it. I still make mistakes, who doesn’t? As long as we learn from them and apply these tools as we continue to move forward in life. Growing is a part of our experience and sharing our knowledge builds a better world.

Note: Sometimes some people just need to learn their own lessons.

Get your orchid blooming every year

Orchids can be temperamental. These days the plants we purchase are standardly not meant to bloom again, like a one use and then discard situation. This is so sad! Let’s put a stop to this and ensure delightful blooms every year.

Firstly and most importantly, find the perfect place. Orchids like indirect light. Place them in a well lit room or perhaps near a window. Ensure they are not getting hit with direct sun.

Create a watering/ feeding schedule. In Summer & Autumn i place two ice cubes in the pot (near the roots) every week and dunk their roots in water for a few hours every second week. My orchids bloom in winter through to Spring. To help them stay healthy and blooming during these months, i give them two ice blocks of orchid food solution every week. Should their roots/soil look try i also dunk them when required.

From time to time, dust and soot will accumulate on the leaves. Ensure to clean your plant, by wiping the leaves with a damp paper towel. Do not leave any water droplets on your plant when finished.

Remove dead leaves carefully. Do not remove leaves that still have some life (some green/yellow still showing), this could harm the plant and delay the plant from blooming. Dead leaves are typically completely brown and lifeless.

When blooming fasten your stalks for support. Re-use the sticks/platforms from your initial bloom or create your own solution. Tie your stalk with the initial clips or wire ties (not too tight). This will ensure your heavy blooms will not cause the stalk to collapse. This also has an added benefit of being aesthetically very pleasing.

After your plant has bloomed, remove the dead flower stalks. Only remove these once they are brown and dry. Should there still be some green, wait until completely lifeless. You will see Orchid stalks have notches. Cut the dead stalks a few millimeters after the second notch.

There you have it! I encourage you to also do some additional research to ensure the best care for your particular plant. Applying all these steps will ensure amazing blooms to enjoy year after year. Here are a few snaps on my orchids last year:

Let’s get crafty!

To be happy in life, develop at least four hobbies: one to bring you money, one to keep you healthy, one to bring you joy, and one to bring you peace.

STAN JACOBS, The Dusk and Dawn Master

Hobbies soothes the mind, while simultaneously keeping it busy with a pleasurable activity. I have always enjoyed getting stuck into something creative. You can even turn your favourite hobby into a business.

Cooking/Baking – Combine your love of food and eating experience into a hobby. Nothing brings me more joy, then feeding my friends and family, and seeing the look of absolute delight on their faces. It is so fun trying a new recipe or if you feel a little adventurous you can even create your own. Sure, there will be some flops, but it’s all part of the process.

Haberdashery – Needle point, Crochet, Cross stitch or Knitting, what ever intrigues you, give it a go. Supplies are not that expensive and you can build your collection as you grow in the craft. I find these especially handy as you are also creating something tangible you can gift or make for your home.

Paint – Get on the wild side and try your hand at painting. There are so many different types out there and so many options on supplies. Not sure what to paint? Find some Bob Ross video’s and start now. You won’t regret it!

Gardening – Let’s get dirty! Put on your gloves and go for it. Don’t have the green thumb? No worries, there is so much information online or ask your local garden center. Keep your garden space clean and care for your plants. Why not plant some herbs or invest in a fruit tree? Profit from clean organic living while you practice your hobby.

In our current times, now is as good a time as any to try your hand at one or more of these crafts. Reap the benefits of having some extra time on your hands and learn something new.

How to make a cozy home

I love a cozy space. Whether it’s one room or a whole house, having a place where you can curl up on your own, or warmly entertain friends and family, has always been important to me. Since we are all spending more time in our own space, having a comfortable home, is important now more then ever.

Pillows and blankets are a must! Nothing says lets cuddle like pillows and blankets. Throw pillows on your bed and couch can also bring some colour into your spaces and always look inviting. Having blankets available for your family or guests to grab when they require it, is always a great idea. Place a basket in your living space with the coziest selection to entice extra comfy-ness.

It is very important to have a clean environment. Sure the animal hair may never be completely gone, but taking a little extra time here and there to vacuum or dust is not only good for your physical health, but mental health as well. Ensuring your spaces are clean and organised, creates a serene space for everyone to enjoy. Maintaining your home inside and out, will bring clean, safe living for years to come.

Stock up! Having ample supply of snacks and drinks (don’t forget to include healthy options) are a great way to create that home sweet home vibe. Making your guests comfortable to reach for anything they require and having that delight handy to put out when you need to, sets your mind at ease. No need to frantically run out last minute.

Create good vibes in your space. People subconsciously notice negative energy so always invite the good vibes. Focus on the 5 senses to bring in positiveness:

  1. See – Use mostly natural and neutral colors in your space to evoke calm. Pops of colour when used correctly can bring joy and brightness. Don’t forget to include some plants!
  2. Touch – Include furniture or other home accessories with different textures and textiles.
  3. Smell – Burn some candles or pop on your natural oil diffuser for that homey smell.
  4. Taste – Dust off your cooking skills! Providing a tasty snack or great meal always goes down well with your family and guests.
  5. Hear – Always play some background music. This will set the mood and fill in the silence, creating a welcoming space.

Lastly, i have found creating functional spaces brings me so much joy and boosts the cozy-ness. Knowing where everything is and being able to grab it when required, brings ease into your daily actions.

Let’s all create positive, calm and cozy homes to enjoy all day everyday!
