Setting the stage in February

We are finally getting used to the rhythm of this year, and by using the discoveries from our journey thus far, we can confidently continue on a better path forward.

They say it takes 21 days to break a bad habit, but how many days does it take to build a positive one? From what I can find, it can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form new behavior, and for it to become automatic. Using this information, let us set one main intention to achieve this year.

Here are some m’s to consider:

1.Mindfulness – Slow down and pay attention. You can set your intention on something as simple as putting your phone down while you are talking to someone. Or you can tackle something a little more challenging, like committing to meditation practice. The main point is to work on using your senses and broadening your experience in every task. Really feel the material of the sheets on your bed when you wake up in the morning. Take a moment to appreciate the subtle sounds of nature outside. Slowly savor every bite of your meal to taste the complexities . Pause to look out the window and watch the clouds or take deep breaths and inhale the sweet smell of spring.

2. Move your body – Not really a workout enthusiast? That’s ok. There are so many things you can do to keep your body active. Get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Find the thing that brings you the most joy and stick to that. Stretch out your muscles and give Yoga a go. Get out of the house with a quick run or walk. Mabey just put in a little extra effort when doing daily tasks, like incorporating some squats while you clean or doing some desk exercises while you work.

3. Me time – Sure this is a little cliché but focusing on you is just as important as anything else. Make daily entries in a journal, check in with your emotions, connect with your faith or slap on a facemask once a week. Set this intention with the love of self in mind. The aim is to block out time, for this task and this task only. Remain in the moment and fight the urge deviate to other things.

Whatever you choose, and no matter how small, the goal is to work on something that will benefit you. The point is to make a conscious effort and stick to the task improving your outlook on yourself (mental/physical), your environment and the people around you. This will not only enrich your daily experiences, but also increase your overall happiness. Remember it is only one task, you got this!

Till next time…
