Slump city

Have you ever just woken up and you already want the day to be over? Do you relate to that FRIENDS theme song ” When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year”.

Maybe you have anxiety that day or face a random bit of depression. Perhaps you just have a lack of motivation? What ever it is, you just cannot seem to gather the strength to tackle that day, even if you have nothing on your plate. Sometimes for no reason at all, we fall into this slump.

So while we lay there fighting to pull away the sheets, we renew our citizenship to slump city, population you. Eventually (maybe not at all), we drudge ourselves up to get started, staying in that head space, setting the mood for the rest of the week. Even when we have a good day, we expect the bad is soon to follow. Always looking over our shoulders waiting for the other shoe to drop, we are never really focused on the task at hand.

While it is ok to have a bad day, and we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves when that happens, we must learn to minimize the effects on our over all life and health. So, how do we stop the cycle? There isn’t some magic elixir we can drink or miracle cure we can apply, we must still do the work ourselves. Start by talking small positive steps when you feel yourself slip into this state. It will make all the difference and ultimately a big change in the grand scheme of things. So what do we need to do?

1.Set one goal and accomplish it – this might be as simple as having a shower or getting dressed, you can even get straight back into bed right after. Ticking just that one thing off, is a great step in the right direction and might motivate you to do more.

2.Do something that makes you feel good – no energy required here, have a cup of soothing tea, light your favourite candle, snuggle in a fluffy blanket or watch a funny video online. Incorporate some positive vibes from the start.

3.Hydrate – drink a big class of water stat. Your body has gone at least eight hours without water when you wake up. This will help flush out toxins, refresh your system and boost your metabolism. Your body and skin will thank you.

4. Visualize your day – picture everything that you would like to accomplish that day. Not only see yourself completing each task, but actually try to experience the physical sensation associated with each one. Then imagine yourself being successful and doing an excellent job. This will give you a preview of the satisfaction that you will have from completing them.

5. Scrap non-essential tasks – is there a giant pile of dishes in the sink? Yes. But do you absolutely HAVE to do them? No. It can be super overwhelming to think about, and try to do, every single thing in one day. Focus only on what you have to do that day and get that done first. All the other tasks will follow. If not, tomorrow is another day.

Always remember it’s ok to not be fine, it’s ok to fail sometimes.
