A connected July

While July did present it’s own challenges, all in all, i feel this year is slipping away one week at a time.

Not being a very eventful month (you know just because of this small pandemic), i filled my time connecting with my favorites. I must say, i have really enjoyed staying in touch with my friends and family, specially the one’s far away. Having very little outside entertainment or social contact, i have grown fond of my daily calls and weekly catch ups. I feel a sense of freedom and semi-normality, even when being confined to my home, by entering a portal to different places, just for a moment on every call.

I honestly never considered how easy it is to stay in touch. It always seemed like such a chore to give someone a call, resorting instead, to text messages. And when i have to much to say and too lazy to type, i rely on the humble voice note. It is strange to say, but did COVID19 bring us closer together?

Being part of a super social culture, we create and contribute to events left, right and center. Our week is never complete with out it and our social calendar fills on the daily. Our weekends are always spent by the fire with company and a glass of something. What i realized about this, these last few months in lock down, is that we usually only partake in surface level conversations and small talk on these occasions.

Now, stuck in the comfort of our homes, we are privy to one on one events. We tend to get deeper more meaningful conversations that may last for hours. We get to know people, i mean, you really get to know them. Their fears, their doubts, their insecurities. What makes them happy the most or sad often. You realise in the end what really matters. It is of course, that simple human connection. The ability to lend an ear, be there and listen. To also receive a shoulder in return when you need it.

Entering into more meaningful conversations can expand to healthier habits within yourself. Shedding the anxiety and opening up on your own thoughts and feelings, filling the cup for both sides involved. Obviously nothing can beat physical presence or touch, however, some how it is like you can sense them around. Once you have that greater understanding, you don’t feel alone anymore.

July showed me what connection is really about. Time to pick up the phone and get connected.

Till next time…
